The junior section of Bristol and West Hockey Club provides training on a Monday night to boys aged 10 to 16 (school years 6 to 11). Training for the year started on 8th September 2008 and takes place at 7 – 8pm on a Monday night at the Ridings Secondary School in Winterborne.
All training is led by qualified hockey coaches and concentrates on both skills and fun. There will be an opportunity to try out skills in friendly matches and compete in tournaments that encourage teams from clubs all across the South West.

North Somerset – Bristol & West Tigers
Training sessions are divided into 3 age groups:
- The Under 11’s are introduced to the basic skills of hockey in a fun way by the dedicated coaching staff. Occassional friendly matches give these juniors the opportunity to try out their skills in a more competitive environment.
- The Under 13’s (school years 7 and 8) still concentrate on the basics but put these skills into game scenarios. The Under 13’s compete in the Avon Hockey Youth League which gives these juniors the opportunity to compete against other clubs in the local area. In the season 2007-08, the Under 13’s played extremely well to reach the playoffs for the league.
- Training for the Tigers (age 13 to 16) is aimed at stretching individual skill levels as well as coaching team drills in support of competitive matches. Bristol & West Tigers play in the Bristol Badgers League (which is run by our club) and play games most weekends. For those that wish to, there is also the opportunity for some Tigers to step up into the Men’s teams to hone their skills and gain further experience. A match fee of £5 is payable at the game for the weekend (even if two games are played).
Sticks are provided for those that are new to the game, but most juniors that train regularly have purchased their own sticks. All other equipment is provided. The Club subsidises the juniors but we ask that all juniors pay a training fee of £1.50 per session (payable on the night).
All juniors that come training are expected to wear shin pads and bring the appropriate clothing for cold and wet nights. Gum shields are also recommended. Juniors should also bring a bottle of water. It should be noted that all the coaches are volunteers and gladly give their time to help those that listen. Juniors that misbehave may have to sit out and, in extreme circumstances, will be asked to leave a training session.
