B&W Jaspers 1s off to a flying start

As the first game of the season arrived following Covid 19 stealing the show, the women's first XI were ready after weekly improvements in pre-season friendlies.

Our ladies got off to a good start in the match with the team confidently moving the ball around as a unit. When the ball was turned over, the wasps set the press early, putting pressure on the opposition and forcing mistakes. An open first half threw up opportunities for counter attacking chances that were gratefully pounced upon by the B&WJ strikers. An early opener from Nat Rait, a penalty corner converted by injector Izzy Hancock and a brace from Toni Clothier, placed the opposition firmly on the back foot with the home team taking a 4-0 half-time lead.

Going into the second half with a commanding score line, the girls in orange could have been forgiven for taking their foot off the gas. However, this didn’t stop the wasps. Motivated by an enthusiastic half-time team talk, and facing an increasingly defensive opposition, our ladies side continued to improve with good movement from the defence to the forward line. Not content with their four goal cushion, the team added two goals from near-identical short corners skilfully converted by player of the match Toni Clothier. Our ladies demonstrated team work and determination adding to the scoreline. Our first team collected a well-earned 6-0 victory starting the league at the top of the league. Not a bad start ladies.

Man of the match: Toni for smashing it upfront scoring 4 goals (starting the season with a hat trick)

Further goals were scored by Izzy (1) (assisted by Daisy) and Nat (1).

We go again next week!
