Bristol & West 2 [9-2] Swansea 3
Report by Dave Vernon
Convincing home win sees B&W 2s return to winning ways
Having ignored the captain's calls for restraint and professionalism, the average Bristol and West Men's 2s player dragged himself out of bed at 8am, two hours after having got in from the lash. They converged on the dressing room at the ridings like a scene from Shaun of the Dead, before a rousing speech from Gaffer Si banished the hangovers.
The opening exchanges were fast and forceful, with the boys in orange and the bare 11 of Swansea trading blow for blow. Around ten minutes in, however, Josh De Witt had grown tired of the games, and lit the fuse with an arrowed ball to the back post from the 23, casually deflected into the roof of the goal on Joe John's reverse. The rest of the first half was a gradual grind towards 4 - 0 at half time, finished off by an Ed Ledger slap across the face of goal from just outinside the D, turned into the goal by the reverse of a defender's stick.
The second half continued in the same vein, with Bristol camped in the Swansea half, and soon making it 6 without reply. A couple of lapses in concentration allowed Swansea to grab two back, and they looked to get back into the game. A barely-present Dave Vernon quashed any hopes of a Swansea comeback by expertly defusing a stray Josh De Witt pass through an improvised interception with his bottom. This prevented what could have been another dangerous Swansea counter-attack, and proved pivotal as a further Bristol and West flurry (including Max Roberts completing his hat-trick of short corner conversions) made the final score 9-2.
At the final whistle, smiles all around but hangovers and the lurgy back with a vengeance 🤒.
Bristol and West 2s march on to their biggest challenge yet, next Saturday away at Cardiff University.
