Bristol & West Jaspers [1-0] Bretforton
Report by: Charlotte Leach
After a flying start to the season last week against Hereford 1s, "Wasps" steal another win in their match against Bretforton 1s.
It’s match day. The glorious October sun was shining. Home supporters lined the side-lines, flying the Bristol & West flag in anticipation. After a solid pre-match strategy talk from Winge in the changing rooms, the team in orange were ready and raring to go.
After a solid win against Hereford last weekend, the Women’s 1s were keen to continue their winning streak and this game was an important make or break. In the first half, a solid Bretforton made it difficult for B&W to make a break but, as Winge had drilled in during the pre-match talk, resilience and patience were key for this game. With this in mind, we played some great hockey; we remained composed, transferring the ball through the defence allowing the midfielders and attackers to make some lovely leads in. With a few extra pairs of legs on the side lines as subs, West worked and ran hard both on and off the ball, making frequent sub changes to maintain the high tempo that was a task for Bretforton to maintain despite a strong effort.
At halftime, the score was still 0-0 but there was plenty of opportunity and we could feel that we were building up to a goal. B&W remained dominant. Strong connections, passes and leads allowed us to move up the pitch and dominate the opposition’s D. After winning another short corner, we knew that we needed to convert it and with a deflection from Charlotte off Emily’s shot on goal to back post, we took the lead!
Remaining composed, we defended well and from the front to keep our lead whilst still making breaks at opportune moments. Wasps finished the match with a 1-0 win and an elated feeling of having maintained our clean sheet for another week.
